Nice, France, 25 May - 2 June 2006: Buildings And Neighbourhoods
(Un)Changing Faces

Gare SNCF, NiceSituated in north Nice, Gare SNCF is the first glimpse of the city for many visitors. Nearby is a lively working class neighbourhood, with many budget hotels, restaurants and ethnic shops. Strolling south towards the city centre and further on to the beach, the proletarian surrounds metamorphosises to one abounding with elegant neoclassical edifices. Promenade des Anglais, fronting the Mediterranean coast, houses some very fine mansions.Working Class ApartmentsHotel Negresco

Handsome grand buildings line the boulevards along the beach front. Vieuxville at the east of town is a small district with many attractive well-conserved houses and artisanal shops. The early morning flower market at Cours Saleya is one of the largest in France. At night, the area around Place Rossetti transforms into a mecca of fine wining and dining.

Vieux Port is a quiet neighbourhood in the vicinity of the harbour at the eastern end of Nice. The harbour berths small seacrafts as well as passenger cruise ships bound for Corsica.

Road Works, Place MassenaThe city is swiftly changing. The main thoroughfare from the train station to Place Massena has been stripped and excavated. A railway line slicing the city centre into eastern and western halves is being constructed. Despite the ungainly fences, steel pilings and denuded tarmac, the charm of the city never fails to shine through.

These are the 30 countries that I have ever set foot on. Airport stopovers don't count!
